Conroe Courier Oct 12, 2020

Events are starting to open a bit, cautiously, keeping in mind social distancing and health guidelines. We are still meeting 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at noon and the in-person contact is very helpful for our club.

Conroe Noon Kiwanis Club supports two youth nonprofit organizations, both The Treehouse Center and Yes to Youth. As we receive news from the groups, we like to share our support to engage the community in their projects. “Raising Happy Confident Kids” is a free Virtual Summit spanning October 7th through October 29th with twenty-three experts sharing information including Adriana Gutierrez from Yes to Youth presenting on Crisis Intervention: How to Spot a Potential Crisis and How to Intervene. Kids are going through unprecedented times and learning to cope can be something beyond ordinary peer pressure. The free event is available at www.raisinghappyconfidentkids.com

At our meeting on Oct. 7, Lieutenant James Guzman from The Salvation Army was our guest speaker. Lieutenant Guzman and his wife, Lieutenant Claudia Guzman and their 2 children 4-year old son Santiago and 6-month-old daughter Sarai, have only been stationed in Conroe for 3 months. Prior to coming to Conroe, they served in Atlanta, Dallas, and Midland. Currently they shelter 20 men, 6 women, and 2 families (with their own bedroom/bathroom) at the 3-year old facility. The community receives free lunches and dinners prepared by partnering organizations and churches but since COVID the Salvation Army team serves the meals.

Salvation Army Angel Tree recipient applications are now available for children in need and an Angel Tree will be set up at The Woodlands Mall. Tentatively the Kettle Program with bell ringers will be stationed outside local grocery stores and shopping venues.

Although we are meeting less frequently, the Conroe Noon Kiwanis Club is still in business! We shine-not decline! As a Club we will continue to assist families at Yes to Youth for Christmas and the girls in residence at The Treehouse Center. If you enjoy being a part of making a difference to the children and youth in the Greater Conroe area, email Javier Pena for more details at jjpena79@gmail.com. We always have room for you!

Join us at our meeting Wednesday, October 21, at noon! We meet at Hacienda Mis Padres (5104 W. Davis, Conroe)
